Position: Assistant Professor (research based)

 

The University of Warsaw is seeking to fill a position of an Assistant Professor (full-time, fixed-term, 100% research-based) within the Volkswagen Foundation grant „The impact of COVID-19 on public support for the European Union (COVIDEU)“ led by Prof. Heike Klüver (Humboldt University Berlin) and co-led by Prof. Sara Hobolt (London School of Economics), Prof. Michał Krawczyk (University of Warsaw), Prof. Theresa Kuhn (University of Amsterdam) and Dr. Toni Rodon (Pompeu Fabra University).

 

Requirements: 

The candidate should: 

  • hold a PhD in social sciences, computer science, or related fields (or be near completion)
  • have a track record of publications in peer-reviewed international journals
  • be experienced in conducting quantitative research
  • have a very good command of techniques of data science/AI/machine learning, including natural language processing (NLP)
  • be experienced with python or other software or programming language suitable for web scraping and NLP
  • show good communication skills
  • have an excellent command of English
     

The following are not required but will be considered an advantage:

  1. Knowledge of the literature on fake news and their importance in political discourse
  2. Experience in running behavioural experiments
  3. Good command of Polish

The competition is open to persons who meet the requirements set in forth in the Act on Higher Education of July 20, 2018 (consolidated text: Journal of Laws 2022, item 574, as amended)[1]

Description of the job:

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with the members of the COVIDEU team, to carry out two inter-related studies:

1.      A study involving collection, processing, and analysis of data on (possibly) fake news related to the handling of the COVID-19 pandemics by the European Union, broadly speaking.

2.      An online field experiment investigating the impact of fake news on COVID-19 on the attitudes towards the EU and European integration.

Participation in other work packages of the COVIDEU project (primarily involving political science theorizing and empirical research using standard econometric techniques and modern AI tools) will be encouraged. No teaching obligation is foreseen.

 

We offer:

Employment for the period of 24 months, subject to an evaluation after the first 6 months. 
Monthly remuneration of 11 000 PLN gross (~ 2 400 EUR) + the 13th salary 
The position is available as of 1st October 2022. A later start is negotiable.
