The Faculty of Geology, Geophysics and Environmental Protection at the AGH University of Science and Technology is offering a short-term Postdoc scholarship in Mineralogy beginning 1st of September 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter, until the end of October 2023.
Scientific environment
The Department of Mineralogy, Petrography and Geochemistry is located at Aleja Mickiewicza 30 in the central part of Krakow and equipped with analytical facilities such as Electron Microprobe Analysis (EMPA), secondary electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman instruments. The successful applicant will be working daily in the Orogen Dynamics Team.
Project description
The position is part of a research project that investigates different types of eclogite and garnet pyroxenite from the Western Gneiss Region in W Norway using petrographic, spectroscopic and mineral-chemical analytical methods at the AGH University of Science and Technology and the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. The research focuses on the petrology of these mid-Palaeozoic rocks that have Proterozoic precursors and occur enclosed in gneisses of Proterozoic origin. The aim is the determination of their geodynamic history that involves ultra-high pressure metamorphism and variable degrees of reaction and retrogression during and after the climax of the Caledonian collision of two cratons.
Tasks
– determination of mineral phase, polymorphy and crystallinity of inclusions at and below sample surfaces
– quantification of the shift of Raman frequencies for estimating remnant pressures of inclusions
– characterisation of mineral inclusion microstructures
– support in determining the evolution of metamorphic pressure and temperature from mineral chemistry, phases, inclusions and inclusion microstructures
– writing of scientific publications for international refereed journals and presentation of research at scientific meetings
Qualifications
– M.Sc. (or equivalent) in earth science, doctorate in earth science
– strong record on mafic to ultramafic rock compositions recording extreme metamorphic conditions
– at least 2 years of hand-on expertise in Raman micro-spectroscopy, SEM and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS)
– documented research experience in analysing mineral inclusion microstructures
– proficiency in spoken and written English
– enthusiasm, excellent communication and presentation skills, capacity for interdisciplinary and international teamwork
Terms of employment
The position is full time and externally funded by the Norwegian Financial Mechanism and the Polish National Science Centre, project no. 2020/37/K/ST10/02784. The gross monthly salary will depend on the starting date and is minimum 11.400 PLN.
